BOVINE INSEMINATIONS

PRIVACY STATEMENT

INTRODUCTION:

This Privacy Statement has been prepared to comply with the National Privacy Principles set
out in the Privacy Act 1988, as amended by the Privacy Amendment ( Private Sector) Act
2000, which came into effect on 21 December 2001 (“the Privacy Act”). It provides
information on how Bovine Inseminations collects, collates, uses, secures and discloses personal or other information obtained from individual Australian dairy farmers.

ABOUT US:

Bovine Inseminations is a family Owned & operated Herd Improvement Business. The company was established in 1976 and offers a range of on farm Herd Improvement services. Since 1987 Bovine Inseminations has offered a Herd Recording Service where milk samples from dairy cows are collected and the analysed data is stored in a Database owned & managed by Bovine Inseminations. The aim is to assist dairy farmers to improve their herds and consequently profitability, via performance selection and improved genetic selection. The data collected by Bovine Inseminations is also provided to dairy industry bodies such as Australian Dairy Herd improvement Scheme (ADHIS) but not exclusively.

Bovine Inseminations also stores financial and stock inventory details of individual dairy farmers, this information is not disclosed under any circumstances other than required by law.

SPECIFIC DATA collected & stored in the Databases:

(1) name and address of the individual herd owner
(2) financial account information
(3) stock inventory information
(4) details of dairy milking shed; and
(5) herd details including:
- cow identification details
- pedigree information
- calving details
- milk volume
- protein yields
- fat yields
- somatic cell count
- behavioural data
- mating details
- cow health event details
- cow confirmation details

Bovine Inseminations provides this data back to individual dairy farmers in the form of hard copy reports or electronically in the form of data interchange format files.
Bovine Inseminations also provides herd details data to ADHIS electronically, according to a pre-arranged schedule. Refer to ADHIS Privacy Statement for further details.

USE OF DATA:

The data is used solely for the following purposes:

(1) as mentioned above, individual dairy farmers use this data (being data that results from analysis carried out by Bovine Inseminations on samples and data provided from that individuals dairy cows) to make performance based selections to improve the quality of their herds and consequently profitability.


(2) ADHIS use this data to calculate and publish Australian Breeding Values (“ABV’s”)
On a range of production, workability and confirmation, somatic cell count, calving ease, cow survival, fertility and live-weight traits; The data is collated for the dairy industry good and provides benefit to all Australian Dairy farmers.

(3) Bovine Inseminations may also provide this data to Artificial Breeding Companies in order to locate daughters of specific Sires, the data will not be released without prior consent from the individual dairy farmer.

(4) Any customer who does not wish to have their data disclosed, as described in items (2) & (3) should contact Bovine Inseminations and nominate any organisation(s) to which data should not be disclosed. Bovine Inseminations will record such organisations as “non-disclosure” and consequently arrange for non-disclosure of data.
